Ring binders

The size of a binder depends on the size of documents that we plan to put into it, the thickness of the content and the mechanism, which will be mounted inside. While designing the artwork please note that the cover should be 17,5 mm larger than the board on each side and the liner should be 5 mm smaller that the board on each side. Below is a drawing of the upper edge of the binder and the view from the inside.

D and R type mechanisms

There are many types of mechanisms used in the production of binders, which are chosen according to the customer needs: ring mechanisms, lever arch mechanisms, lever-operated clips, wire clips. The most popular are ring mechanisms, which may have two or four rings - round (STR) and D-shaped (STD). The following tables show the examples of ring mechanisms, their capacity and the standard size of the board, the cover and the liner. This information will help you to choose the right width of the spine and to prepare the binder artwork.

Lever arch mechanisms

It is advised to mount the lever arch mechanism in office binders, where the content changes frequently. It is convenient to use and has got a large capacity. To prevent the binder from opening you can mount the metal eyelets on the first page. The following table shows the differences of binder sizes depending on the chosen solution.

The thickness of the content

Knowing the grammage of sheets, which are going to be inserted into a binder, and their quantity we can estimate the thickness of the content and select an appropriate mechanism.
